Korean Electronics Giant Samsung Loses Second 3G Patent Complaint Against Apple

A week after German’s Mannheim Regional Court dismissed Samsung’s first lawsuit against Apple, the court today rejected Samsung’s second complaint too. Today’s ruling addresses Korean manufacturer arguments that Apple 3G/UMTS technology infringes upon its patents.

Judge Andreas Voss did not state any particular reasons for the decision. The outcome of Samsung’s first two German actions against Apple may be based on reasons specific to the validity and/or infringement of those patents, in which case Samsung could still prevail over any or all of three other 3G/UMTS patents it is asserting against Apple in Mannheim. Samsung is furthermore in its remaining five lawsuits from the total seven suing Apple over two non-standards-related patents, including a patent on a method to enter smiley on a mobile device.

Apple’s and Samsung’s claims against each other continue to have a very high drop-out rate in different jurisdictions. We’re still awaiting more information on today’s outcome and will update this post as soon as we hear more.
