Being bored at work is no fun, especially when you spend so much of your time at and doing your job. Now is the time to re-evaluate your situation if you’re bored with your career instead of sitting around not making any actions for improvement and hoping your circumstances change on their own.

Use the following advice to help guide you to better days so you can find a position you actually enjoy doing. Sitting around, waiting for opportunities to land in your lap can be a frustrating process. Instead, be proactive and go out and challenge yourself and be willing to take risks so you can advance your career and do a job you like.

Think about Your Passions

When you’re bored with your career, it’s a good time to sit down and truly think about your passions. Consider various paths you could take and what actually makes you excited to get out of bed each day. Typically if you find a career that aligns well with your passions and skills, then you’ll feel more satisfied at work overall. Your dream job is out there, but you have to be willing to discover what that is and then go after it.

Explore Other Options

Another idea for what to do when you’re bored with your career is to explore what other options are out there. For example, if you like to exercise and work with people and are sick of working in an office environment, then you might consider taking courses in Personal Training.

At least take the next step and see if it’s a job you can see yourself doing for an extended period of time. You won’t know if the other options are right for you until you actually get your feet wet and familiar with the job duties and responsibilities. It’s also not a bad idea to ask to job shadow someone who’s in the position you’re after to see if it’s truly a good fit or not.

Go for A Promotion at Work

You should never underestimate your abilities or talents and always be looking for what else you can be doing to better yourself. One reason you may be bored with your career is because you aren’t being challenged enough on a daily basis. One idea is to go for a promotion at your current job and see if a new higher-level position is the answer for you. This is a great way to step outside your comfort zone and get ahead without having to completely change the direction in which your career is heading.

Talk to Your Boss

It’s possible you’re bored with your job and aren’t sure why or what you’re exactly feeling or what your options are at your current workplace. In this case, it’s a wise idea to have a one-on-one conversation with your boss and get their perspective on where they see you heading in the future. Ask them to be honest with you and get feedback about your latest performance scores and what it is they see you doing and being successful at down the road. It’s possible you two will come up with ways in which you can keep yourself better engaged right where you are now.

Identify & Work with A Mentor

Sometimes you not only feel bored with your career but also completely lost in general. What will help you out the most is to identify and work with a mentor or career counselor. Find someone who you trust and look up to and has already paved a successful career path for themselves and can help get you on the right track. Also, speaking with a career counselor might allow you to better see what you’re good at and open your eyes up to new opportunities you had never thought possible before.

Find A Hobby

Finally, maybe you’re okay with being bored in your job for the present moment and comfortable with where you’re at in life but are looking for ways to spend your free time. If you’re bored with your career then consider finding a hobby you enjoy doing as a way to fill your schedule, utilize your other skills and meet new people. Always keep your options open because you never know when a side hobby such as blogging or coaching sports will turn into a full-time job and career for you. You should also use your hobbies as a networking opportunity and way to expand your list of contacts. You never know who may be able to help you out with your career going forward.
