How to Make the Ultimate Dating Profile

Modern dating has taken our love lives online. According to recent surveys, around 19% of American brides met their spouse online, and these online matches seem to be faring well. Marriages that came from online relationships are also less likely to end within the first year. Online dating is clearly the future and a great option for those looking to find someone. So, we’ve compiled some top tips for crafting your own online profile and some advice on how to succeed in finding love online.

Pick a nice picture

You would think this would be a no-brainer but dating sites are filled with badly lit and blurry pictures. Your picture is a big part of your first impression so, while you want a picture that tells people who you are, you also wanted it to be good quality. You should also avoid using a group photo as your main picture. While many of us love posing with our friends and family, group shots make it difficult for potential suitors to figure out exactly who it is they’re supposed to be looking at.

Phrase it right

How you phrase your profile information is also a key part of online dating success. While it is important to remember that this is your first impression, you shouldn’t be afraid to be honest about yourself and have a little fun. Your profile is all about getting to know you, so, the more of your personality in your description, the better. Make sure to write an icebreaker on your profile too, something that will give potential matches a starting point for a conversation. It’ll make those potentially awkward first interactions go by much smoother.

Open up your search criteria

Online dating can often allow us to be very, very specific in our preferences. But, often, what we think we want isn’t who we match up best with. In fact, most online dating sites actually widen our fields for us by ignoring some of the restrictions we place on ourselves. Trying to find someone, for example, that is like an ex-girlfriend is hardly healthy and restricts your options.  The more specific preferences you have, the more you restrict your dating pool. Don’t be afraid to take some chances. We can often find love in the unlikeliest of places.

Really Look at the Profiles

Online dating websites and apps can provide us with a lot of choices when it comes to potential matches. But you should still examine each match carefully. There can often be the temptation to get carried away with all the options and immediately dismiss people out of hand. But, if you’re looking for a match, you should really read through each profile. Sometimes, it isn’t what’s on the surface that makes a lasting impression on us.

Take your time

Don’t be afraid to take it slow. One of the benefits of online dating is that you can build up to meeting in-person. Don’t be afraid to take your time getting to know the other person and taking it at your own pace. Freeing yourself from the expectation of ‘when’ something can happen takes a lot of pressure off and really allows you to focus your energy on yourself and your match.
