Lake Wanaka is simply one of the most beautiful places in the world, but also one of the most romantic places to kiss your loved one when in New Zealand. At least that is what this awesome and extremely romantic infographic says.

Located in the Otago region, in the amazing New Zealand, at an altitude of 300 meters, this lake covers an area of 74 square miles. Yep, that is a lot! Wanaka, once called Lake Pembroke, isNew Zealand’s fourth largest lake and some of its areais believed to be more than 980 feet deep.

Wanaka is still one of the few lakes in New Zealand’s South Island with an unmodified shoreline, which means it is protected by special legislation, specifically the Lake Wanaka Preservation Act of 1973. This ruling established the constitution of the group “Guardians of Lake Wanaka”, whose members are appointed by the national Minister of Conservation and advise on measures to protect the lake.

Besides, the lake is also home to a special challenge. Nothing romantic here, though. The Lake Wanaka is part of the “the world’s most scenic long-distance triathlon”, the description given to the famous sporting event known as Challenge Wanaka. Every year, more than 1,600 athletes are expected to tackle the challenge, showing spectacular skills only worthy of the top competitors.

The lake’s aboriginal name comes from a corruption of the Maori work Oanaka, which means “the place of Anaka”, the name given to the local tribal chief. So this practically means you will be kissing your girlfriend or boyfriend just in the chief’s face. A little respect, please.

The lake shares the name with the town of Wanaka, a beautiful place that attracts thousands of tourists every year. This infographic hopes to turn you into the next one! Who knows?
