We have reached in such a time where we have around 1.5 billion computer users worldwide. Worldwide computer usage increased 342% from 200 to 2008; all of these users create and interact with data. The internet’s increasing popularity around the world means more and more people are sharing information online. Worldwide datacenters now annually consume as much energy as Sweden more information being shared means more space used. Luckily, hard drive manufacturers have kept up, producing bigger and cheaper hard drives years after years. Our hard drives are becoming larger still. In May 2007 Hitachi introduced the first terabyte hard drive, which holds 1000GB. One Company, colossal strange, predicts they will have a 1.2 petabyte hard drive on the market in 2-5 years.
