Houses and Apartments

A garage may not be one of the prettiest rooms in the house, but it sure is one of the most important. Many a time, taking care of the garage takes a back seat, which may result in overlooking one of the most important appliances in the house- the garage door. Many of us just know the garage door as one button- open and one button – close, well, there is a lot to it than just that.

Like any other heavy duty appliance in your household say for example your air conditioner, oven, refrigerator, your garage door also needs constant maintenance to function properly. With these few tips you may be able to ensure that your garage door is getting the care and maintenance that is needed.

Proper lubrication

A squeaky door is never a good thing, which means there is more friction between the joints, which is just a disaster waiting to happen. Make sure you lubricate your door. You can either ask for the recommended lubrication from your manufacturer, or spray in some silicon spray or a lithium spray on the joint. Make sure to lubricate the hinges, chain rail, metal rollers and other parts of the doors as well.

Cleaning the track

Lubricating is good, but it may not be the ideal solution for every part of the door. The door track especially is not a good place to use lubricant. The lubricant deposition may attract dust and other particles that once get deposited, over time, can harden and ruin the smooth functioning of the door. An easier and simpler method is to clean the track regularly with a damp cloth and get rid of any sticky residue.

Aligning you door sensors

A regular check on your door to check if the sensors are aligned properly is always a good habit. Many a times, the door won’t function properly, because the sensors have been knocked out of position. In such an instant, a gentle push is all that it takes for the doors to function normally again. For the sensors to function correctly they have to face one another, in which case there will be a constant light that comes one. If they are not aligned, then that constant light is replaced by a blinking one.

Weather seal

Installation of a weather seal will increase the life of your garage door. Not only does it save energy, weather seals also help prevent moisture accumulation inside your garage, which means you will have to spend less, trying to get rid of moisture damage later.

Door opener

Many a times, the door of the garage just won’t shut completely or opens automatically, don’t go around banging the poor garage door, no matter how frustrating it is. You just have to switch the power supply off for a few seconds and switch it back on. Once you have switched it on, the arrow down button should be pressed in completely, till the door shuts all the way after you release the button.
