Japan’s leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo has announced that its ‘Xi’ LTE network has now passed 2 million subscribers base following a surge in new sign ups, reports Tech In Asia. The carrier’s first million took a year to acquire, making its growth to two million more than four times faster than before.

The subscribers to Xi (pronounced “crossy”), the company’s extra-high-speed LTE mobile service offering a maximum downlink of 75 Mbps, surpassed two million on March 18, the service which actually launched on December 24, 2010. Since then, subscriptions have doubled to two million in just three months, propelled by the introduction of the first Xi-compatible smartphones in November 2011.
