Flickr Commons

Flickr Commons, a public domain photographs collection which was founded initially through a partnership with the US Library of Congress has marked its fifth anniversary with total of 250,000 photos with galleries of most viewed pictures. Flickr Commons debuted back in January 16, 2008 with just 1,500 photos and in just a matter of five years time has expanded widely. Furthermore, it constitutes over 2 million tags and over 165,000 comments.

Here is more about the Commons:

The Commons was launched on January 16 2008, when we released our pilot project in partnership with The Library of Congress. Both Flickr and the Library were overwhelmed by the positive response to the project! Thank you!

The program has two main objectives:

To increase access to publicly-held photography collections, and

To provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge. (Then watch what happens when they do!)
