Search Engine Optimisation, commonly referred to as just SEO, is one of the hottest online marketing tactics currently in practice. What started as a relatively unknown niche is now more or less a necessity for any business hoping to turn a profit. If you’ve read a little about SEO, you may think that it sounds easy enough to master without spending a penny. However, as the saying goes, a little knowledge can be dangerous. Here are my best tips for the DIY approach to SEO.

Keep Learning

Despite what some people would have you believe, SEO isn’t a walk in the park. True, when Google’s search algorithm was still in its infancy, you could include a couple of keywords on your website and do pretty well. However, times have changed. SEO is now a huge, multi-faceted marketing technique that goes way past your content. Backlinks, location, videos and images, and even the rudimentary coding of your site all come into play. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a lot of success with SEO through the DIY route. However, it does mean that you shouldn’t be hitting a point any time soon where you consider yourself an expert. You should constantly be on the lookout for opportunities to learn more about SEO, using professional learning resources like Gotch SEO.

Up the Frequency of your Blog Posts

If you don’t already have a blog on your business website, then set one up immediately. If you do have a blog on your site, then start posting a little more regularly. This is one of the many factors that affects the rank of a website on SERPs, and a lot of business owners and marketers don’t update their blogs nearly enough. Just make sure you’re posting things that are actually valuable to the people you’re targeting. Whatever you do, don’t publish post after post telling people about how great your business is or about some kind of new promotion. A couple of self-promotional posts here and there is fine, but it isn’t going to get you results in the long run. Instead, write about your industry in general to show off your expertise, or any subject that your target market are passionate about.

Place Keywords Wisely

Being the resident SEO wizard isn’t as easy as it used to be. The days when you could rank by hiding keywords in the code of your website are long gone. These days, if you can’t see the words with your own two eyes, then they count for nothing. In fact, hiding them like this can even get you penalised by Google! Specifically, you need to make sure that your keywords are included in the page titles, as well as all the headings and subheadings used in the content itself. Just try to space this out, and don’t go above 3-4 of the same keyword per 500 words. This is known as “stuffing”, and is one of the things you’ll get penalised for.
