According to ABI Research report, one billion mobile cameras shipped on 2012, of which around 80% were in smartphones. Sounds fascinating, right: Almost every smartphone shipped in today’s time has an embedded rear camera and one in three smartphones even having front-facing camera, bringing the count to one billion.
“Mobile device cameras are becoming more than just a digital camera for taking snapshots of your kids and pet. New services like augmented reality and gesture recognition are now easily conceivable in mobile devices,” senior analyst Josh Flood explains.
Rounding the numbers for future, about 2.7 billion cameras in mobile device the research firm predicted to ship in 2018. “Two hundred and thirty million smartphones are projected to be shipped with gesture recognition in 2015,” adds Flood.
