HVAC systems can often be one of the most neglected elements of a home or office, even though they are a vital component to most buildings. Most people do not fully understand how to maintain an HVAC unit, which can cause careless mistakes in maintaining their functionality. Nevertheless, a well maintained HVAC is imperative not only to the health of everyone who lives in or enters the building, but also to the longevity of your system. The following is an overview of four signs that your HVAC system is in need of maintenance.

Increase in Energy Costs

One of the top ways to tell your HVAC system needs maintenance is because your energy costs have risen unexpectedly. It is true that our energy costs may rise due to other factors, a hike in costs, using more energy than usual, or expanding a building could all be the culprit behind these increases. However, if your costs have risen without an obvious reason, it may be time to schedule maintenance for your system.

Particles and Unpleasant Odors

Another strong indication that your HVAC system needs maintenance is that there are visible particles in the air and/or it is emitting an unpleasant odor. If your system has not been serviced in over a year, it may begin to collect dust and other harmful particles that will then be expelled into the air with each use. Additionally, unpleasant odors can be caused by the presence of mold and other dangerous toxins. If you notice a foul odor coming from your HVAC system you need to contact a professional HVAC company immediately as mold can be highly toxic and can spread very quickly.

Increase in Noise Level

Although most HVAC systems are noisy on some level, one that is excessively loud and/or has an excessive increase in the level of noise it produces may need to be serviced. While there are many reasons why the noise level may be excessive, in general, this is a sign that something is misaligned or malfunctioning. If you are concerned with the level of noise coming from your HVAC system, you need to contact a reputable HVAC company as soon as possible.

Excess Moisture

Lastly, the presence of excess moisture is a telltale sign that your HVAC system needs urgent maintenance. This is because moisture is typically a sign of an HVAC leak, or that something within the system is blocked or broken. If you notice excess moisture around your unit or near the connected pipes make a call to have your system serviced very soon. Overall, there are plenty of ways to tell that your HVAC system needs maintenance. If you have any combination of the above signs, you definitely need to schedule maintenance for your system. Whether you have any of these signs or not, your HVAC system needs to be serviced at least once every six to twelve months. Rather than waiting for a disaster, or for your system to send you signals that it is malfunctioning, contact a reputable HVAC company to schedule maintenance annually.
