Unfortunately, they may come a time when you need to hire a lawyer. Why is that unfortunate? It is unfortunate because something bad has to happen for a lawyer to get involved in the majority of cases. However, when it happens you cannot go back in time and make changes – all you can do is look for the right lawyer for the job. Because there are so many lawyers on the market, making a choice is not easy. Thankfully, there is a way to make it easier, and to make sure you pick the right one. All you have to do is find a few characteristics that every top lawyer possesses.

Experience

You might think that skill is the most important characteristic of a good lawyer, but you would be wrong. When it comes to lawyers and solicitors, a level of experience is the most important feature that they can own.  Years of experience makes up for a lot because experience means they have been there and done it all and bought the t-shirt for laughs. As a result, there isn’t too much that can surprise an experienced solicitor, which in turn means that everything is predictable. Experience is not everything, but it does account for a lot.

Communication Skills

Communication skills are essential in all walks of life, and the law is no different. A good solicitor needs to be able to communicate because the law is complicated and difficult to understand. The odds are that you, as a novice, won’t be able to keep up, which is why they need to be able to simplify the message into bite size chunks. Plus, they might need to address a judge or a jury, depending on the severity of the situation. If they cannot communicate succinctly and effectively, your chances of winning will lessen.

Chemistry

No, this doesn’t mean a degree in one of the sciences! Chemistry means that they have an ability to forge a bond with you during your working relationship. Okay, you can have a business relationship where you don’t particularly like one another, but you make it work for the good of the case. However, that only adds strain to the process, and that is strain you don’t need to add. When you meet for the first time, look out for the signs of rapport that will develop into a good and healthy relationship.

Availability

Obviously, you want your legal team to be at your beck and call whenever you need to talk. The problem is that some lawyers may have plenty of clients, which means they can find it hard to juggle their workload. It may sound harsh, but you should avoid these people like the plague. The best lawyers always seem as if they have time for you no matter the day or the time. Your solicitor should be available on your schedule, not their schedule.

Going off a reputation is not always sufficient. In fact, it is irresponsible because anyone can fool you with a reputation. To ensure that their reputation is legitimate, ask for and check the references that they provide.
