The Wall Street Journal – citing “people familiar with the matter” – reporting that Japanese giant Sony does considered but at last rejected download-only scheme for its next gaming console. The company is targeting a 2013 release for the successor of its PlayStation 3 console. The company decided against a download-only model as consoles without optical drives would add pressures on brick-and-mortar and online retailers that sell game disks. Interesting to note, Sony’s rival, Microsoft planning to include an optical disk drive in the next instalment of its Xbox 360 console.
