With the confirmation coming from multiple resources, and as was first reported by AllThingsD, LinkedIn has acquired contact management startup Rapportive – which makes a browser plugin that overlay Gmail with contextual information about email contacts.

Rapportive raised about $1 million in 2010 from investors including Charles River Ventures, Dave McClure, Paul Buchheit, Jason Calacanis, Gary Vaynerchuk, Shervin Pishevar and Venture Hacks. The startup which is still available only for Gmail, overlays an email correspondent’s social networking accounts alongside open messages and drafts.

In September, Rapportive CEO Rahul Vohra was quoted as saying Rapportive users viewed more than 65 million contacts per month. He also said at the time that the company was preparing to sell premium products. LinkedIn seems to have gotten vivid better choices with regards of acquisitions, picking up Rapportive in order to bulk up on with its previous purchases – Cardmunch and ConnnectedHQ on what would looking out to be some still-be-known contact management product.
