Many of us are guilty of neglecting our eyesight when it comes to self-care. We assume that what will be, will be. One day we may have to wear reading glasses or our eyesight might deteriorate, but it’s just one of those things. We think poor eyesight runs in families and there is nothing we can do about it. However, this simply isn’t true. There are many things you can do to help take care of your eyes, just like the rest of your body. Here are some fantastic ways to help your eyes stay healthy and your sight strong as you get older.
A healthy diet full of vitamins, minerals, and plenty of water helps all your body’s functions, including your eyesight. Studies show that antioxidants found in dark green vegetables can reduce your risk of developing cataracts and fish, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, can slash your chances of getting macular degeneration.
Wear sunglasses with added UV protection on sunny days. If you wear glasses, be sure to also get some prescription sunglasses so your vision isn’t impaired. You should also be sure to protect them by wearing safety goggles when doing DIY or working with chemicals.
Get Regular Check-up’s
You should get your eyes checked at least once every two years at a certified clinic such as the St George Eye Center. This will ensure that any changes in your sight or eye health are spotted as soon as possible and can help you to avoid any long-term damage. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s incredibly important to check your prescriptions regularly, as any changes could mean your lenses are actually doing more harm than good.

Take Time off Screens
Staring at a screen for too long is something we’re all guilty of. But, it can put you at risk of dry eyes, eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, and trouble focusing. To protect your eyes, make sure you wear your glasses if you need them and take a short break every 20 minutes.
Keep Your Glasses Clean
So many people that wear glasses take them off at night to find them covered in smears and smudges. This can cause your eyes further strain. Be sure to wipe your glasses using a clean cloth regularly throughout the day.
Diabetes and high blood pressure are just two of the physical ailments that can affect your eyesight if left untreated. Making sure you stay as fit and healthy as possible.
Regular exercise can also cut your risk of developing macular degeneration as you age. Be sure to get some cardio exercise such as running, swimming or a brisk walk a few times a week.
Your eyesight is exceptionally precious. You only get one set of eyes, so do your best to look after them and preserve excellent eyesight and health for a long time to come.
