European Commissioner Neelie Kroes reportedly promised that by 2015, the Commission will roll out a single telecoms market throughout the EU. The commission says bringing all the telcos under one hood will provide an additional €110 billion or 0.8 percent of GDP moreover a single European telephone number would render roaming charges obsolete would be part of the proposal. The original deadline for the proposal was this October.
“I’m the same age as [ex-Manchester United football club manager] Alex Ferguson, but I have no intention to retire until I’ve knocked down all the barriers to the single market,” said Digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes. Kroes said the commission will soon bring forward proposals for a single telecoms market. “Just think it through, a telecoms market without borders, without fragmentation, and that is the major priority for the rest of my mandate.”
